Committed Communities Fresh Streams for World Missions by Charles Mellis, Wm Carey Library, 1976, 160pp A brilliantly written exploration of the role of committed communities in the ongoing worldwide mission of the Church. Not only is it a review of their significance during almost 2 millenia of Christian expansion, it also contains the mature and creative reflection of a man of singular achievement in the missionary enterprise.

Faith Promise Why and How? by Norman Lewis, NL, 1992, 125pp Paul Smith, Peoples Church, Toronto, Canada writes in his Foreword, "Any pastor could read this book and then launch the Faith Promise system in his church without the help of anyone else. I would say most emphatically to my fellow pastors: Read this book, study this book, put the principles of this book into practice and the missionary work of your church will be revolutionised."

God's Call To Mission by David W. Shenk, Herald Press, 1994, 229pp

In his foreword, Leighton Ford states that he likes this book because it is a work of love, it is written from the standpoint of one who has spent his life involved in missions, it is Bible-based, it has a narrative form, it is theological, it is simple and clear, and it is Christ-centred. The author looks at both the Old and the New Testaments in his explanation of God's Call to Mission, using contemporary examples to show how the Bible challenges us to missions today. At the end of each chapter are some questions for reflection as well as suggested readings from both the Old and New Testaments.

God's Missionary People - Rethinking the Purpose of the Local Church by Charles van Engen, Baker Book House, 1991, 223pp

Has the church lost its identity as a nation of priests? Can God's people catch a vision for the unique ministry God has given them? Charles van Engen advocates a fuller identification between the local congregation and the universal church, challenging ministry leaders to redefine their ideas about the nature of the church. This book is a church growth and administration resource which instils a burden as well as facts and concepts. The author works through realities of church life and organisation, but he seeks to present them in their kingdom perspective so Christians begin advancing a kingdom instead of maintaining a defensive fortress.

God's Simple Plan For His Church - And Your Place In It: A Manual for House Churches by Nate Krupp, Solid Rock Books Inc, 1993, 178pp God is getting His church ready for a revival, a great in-gathering of the harvest and end-time persecution. The purpose of this book is to show that the Great Commission can be fulfilled very quickly by a multiplication of simple house churches. Jim Montgomery of DAWN Ministries notes, "If the church will look at this simple description of what the New Testament church looked like, we truly can see the Great Commission fulfilled in our time."

Mission Is For Every Church Edited by Jojo Manzano, OMF International, 1994, 139pp "This is an excellent resource which can be used for missionary education in the local church, among Christian fellowships on campus, in offices and in the home. Its content is biblically based. It is balanced, practical and realistic as well as comprehensive in scope" (Rodrigo Tano, President, Alliance Biblical Seminary, Philippines)

The Mission Of The Church In The World - A Biblical Theology by Roger E. Hedlund, Baker Book House, 1991, 300pp A missionary to India presents a fresh, Asian perspective on what the work of the church is about. This is a book about the Bible and missions written from the standpoint of Christians standing toe-to-toe with followers of other faiths. Its solid biblical exegesis, unquestionable evangelical stance, and its magnificent obsession to reach the unreached makes this book a must for missionary thinkers.

A People For His Name - A Church-Based Missions Strategy by Paul A. Beals, Wm Carey Library, 1995 (revised edition), 259pp "If a library were to be limited to just one book on the Christian mission, A People for His Name might well be that book! And those who have availed themselves of the first edition of this book will certainly want to procure this revised edition. The changes scattered throughout the book are important. And the whole is well calculated to enable both clergy and laity, both missionary practitioner and missionary supporter, to understand Christian missions in a way that no other missionary text actually does" (David J Hesselgrave)

The Missionary's Home Ministry (FURLOUGH) what it is and is not

Missionaries are called to minister to people. Incorporated into this ministry is one's personal testimony concerning God's sovereignty in life's goals and values.

Missionaries are accountable to sending churches. They gladly report what God is doing in the work.

Missionaries represent their field and mission: its organization, opportunities, projects, needs, and vision.

Missionaries challenge people to serve abroad. Ministries During Home Ministry Benefits to the local church Missionaries' and appointees' Home Ministry will provide...

  1. A new vision for world missions.
  2. A challenge to prayer for the lost.
  3. An education in missions and overseas ministries.
  4. A stimulus for young people's dedication to Christian service.
  5. A challenge to the faith of God's people.
  6. An occasion for church members to know missionaries personally.
  7. A visible proof that God is still working through people ... and that some are responding to His commission to go. 8. A renewed understanding of how we are all part of a team. 9. A new opportunity for personal involvement in missions.

Home Ministry is not accrued vacation, nor just paid opportunity for travel. Missionaries continue to be supported and as members of the mission, fulfill duties related to home churches, the mission and the field of service. Home Ministry is not primarily fund raising, but missionaries are encouraged to minister and to raise friends for God's work abroad. God provides through His people as they gain a vision of what He is doing abroad.

Home Ministry is not always easy as missionaries face much travel, irregular schedules, weariness and upsets to family life. However it is a wonderful time of renewed friendships, fellowship, opportunities for personal growth and development as well as for much-needed spiritual and physical renewal.

This is a time for friends and supporters to minister to missionaries. The book Serving as Senders by Neal Pirolo will help you care for your missionaries when they are on home ministry. Order from UFM International.

Misconceptions About Home Ministry

Home ministry (furlough) for a foreign missionary is a time granted away from the mission target area for the purpose of physical, mental, and spiritual refreshment and growth. It is a time or representing the work of the mission to family, friends, and sending churches. The missionary's commission includes ministry to the local church by sharing how God has worked in his life, how God has prepared him for ministry, how the plight of the lost has challenged him, and how the Lord is using his mission board to enable Christians to reach out to those in other lands.
