Catch The Potential Of Those Maps -- I hope you were able to imagine the potential of that map software in the item above. I'll give you an example. My CD came on a Friday. I grabbed it and headed out the door for a weekend speaking engagement to a church of 2000. By Sunday morning, my presentation was practically revolutionized by the inclusion of richly-researched maps about the country I was highlighting in my message. It doesn't really matter which part of the world you have to cover -- this one's got at least something on just about everywhere. There are GIFs, TIFs, and a ton of other formats... with all different pixel ratios and sizes, so it'll adapt to the level of resolution and clarity you need. And the interface couldn't be simpler. The maps aren't locked into some kind of weird format that forces you to send royalty payments to the authors every time you turn around. Get this -- there are hundreds, maybe thousands of maps on this CD -- and they're all available for this one $30 price. I bought a CD not long ago from a commercial vendor for $60... something like "Coolmaps" or whatever. I've barely used it. The maps weren't as focused on missions... and frankly, it just wasn't as easy to implement. If you're a mobilizer -- or if you're a goer -- either way, if you print brochures, newsletters, or flyers, get this CD. I guarantee you'll find something useful within one month. If you don't, send it back to GMI and I bet they'll cheerfully refund your money. And in case you were wondering, I don't work for them -- and they're not giving me any kind of benefit "cut" for this announcement. I'm just one beggar telling another where to find bread. :-)

WebSiteMaps.com

I would _highly_ recommend WebSiteMaps.com - I just finished using them for two maps on a website I'm developing for our home church. They put the Yahoo/Mapquest/Expedia maps to shame.

Cost - minimum charge is $39.95 per map.

At each year's International Conference on Computing and Missions http://www.iccm.org , Bob Sutterfield finds one jaw-dropper application. Worldskip Dot Com

http://www.worldskip.com Wouldn't it be nice if someone would design a web site where you could get loads of information on any country of the world. Business, economy and government. Travel, people and culture. News, weather and currency details. The folks at Worldskip dot com based in Oakland California have come up with the site of your dreams (see the above web address). The site is well laid out, easy to navigate and packed full of information. I selected Cambodia from the Asia menu and was amazed at the array of information possibilities. This one is well worth a bookmark. Thanks to Brigada Today for bringing it to our attention.

Free GMI Maps

http://www.gmi.org

One of the better offers I came across was the "free map download" offer available at the Global Mapping International web site (see above). Each week the people at GMI have a designated map that can be downloaded free from their web site (in Adobe Acrobat or Windows metafile format, zipped for easier download). One week it was "Concentration of Muslims and Christians." another it was "An Australian's Perspective of the World." "Malnutrition of Children", "India - Percent Hindu and Muslim", and "Distribution of Hispanics in United States" have been the titles of some other maps offered. Permission is given for the maps to be duplicated and distributed for non-commercial Christian ministry purposes. My Scottish heritage comes to the fore when it comes to free offers. This one has to be checked out. Look at http://www.gmi.org/products/freemap.htm#schedule to see a schedule of coming maps.

The maps are posted at http://www.gmi.org/freemap/freemap.htm.

Custom Maps

Our experience with the "standard" web maps, such as Map Blast, etc. is that in addition to their very grainy bad look that seldom prints well, they are quite often very inaccurate. They may locate your church yards/meters down the proper road, or it may be miles/kilometres from its proper location. You are much better off contracting with a local Map Shop, or any good map maker to get a custom map made for your church that can be used for all your publishing needs.
We have found that the people at http://www.graphicmaps.com/custmaps.htm do a great job for a very low rate.

ATLAPEDIA

http://www.atlapedia.com
The column also pointed to what looks like a useful source of maps . The item describes it as “a great free resource for geography buffs, current affairs enthusiasts, followers of Tear Fund’s projects and students.” At atlapedia.com you will find an extensive library of world physical and political maps that are free and are easily transportable for overheads, powerpoint presentations, and school projects. You will find loads of information ion every country of the world with data and facts to support the maps. It sounds as if this site would be worth checking out.

NEW TOOL HIGHLIGHTS COUNTRIES AND PEOPLES OF THE WORLD

http://www.factsonfile.com/

This past week, I had a chance to preview a terrific little tool soon to be made public. With a focus on seeking adoption for every remaining unreached people group, this mission-encyclopedia CD can only be described as one of a kind! It has unique one-page profiles on every country and every people. I know that might sound like "old hat", but these are beautiful and telling. What's more, get this: the designers have obtained complete copyright releases for the whole CD full of data. If you were to buy a complete set of "Culture-grams", they might set you back $100. Or you could get the map set in "Facts On File"... and the maps alone would run about $149. (This tool has beautiful maps... with full color vector graphics that print out in stunning detail at whatever size you need. If you bought "Background Notes", they'd be $59... but no one has them on digital form, and if they did, you wouldn't have copyright release to copy and paste them into your documents and brochures. If you managed to get digital copies of the CIA World Factbooks, they'd be at least $69 - $79... but get this... All those resources and more are included on this CD. And these profiles are clear and concise one-page summaries with 59 indicators. And would you believe there are 17,000 of them? I'm not kidding! If they were a penny a profile, that alone would be $170. Imagine your church's next missions banquet. Just take the list of countries where your church is working, then print out country profiles (or people group profiles) for each of those focus areas. Have someone laminate them and -- presto -- full-color take-home memento placemats that serve as a permanent prayer reminder. Got a missions prayer night service coming up? Just print out the relevant profiles and you'll instantly have a snappy hand-out. Or simply copy and paste a copy of the relevant country map into your new missions brochure -- a map for each missionary, showing where he/she is laboring! And these are all released for reprinting. At times, that's been the frustration with other profiles -- copyright protection. These are "deliverables"!!!

Here's the amazing part. The creators of this resource are talking about offering it first through Brigada, for a $20-off price of $49. After two or six or 10 weeks, it'll go on sale for the rest of the evangelical world... at $69. When will it become available? Probably about two months from now. Start saving your pennies. Your agency or church will want at least one copy of this tool!

LIKE "MAPS ON FILE" BUT CHEAPER AND COPYRIGHT RELEASED

If you're curious, go to: http://www.factsonfile.com/ and look up their product called "Maps on File (CD version)". There are sample map images there on the website, so you can get a feel for the maps in that product. I'm telling you the honest truth -- the maps in "Countries and Peoples of the World" are every bit as pretty ... and just as high-res, and just as detailed. The only thing is, "Maps on File" is $199.95... and "Countries and Peoples of the World" is $48.30. http://www.ywam.org/books/countries_and_peoples.htm
